SBCC Building Codes

On November 17, 2006, the Washington State Building Code Council voted to adopt the 2006 Editions of the national models codes with some new amendments and some changes existing amendments. The Council also adopted changes to the Washington State Energy Code and Ventilation and Indoor Air Quality Code.

The state amendments to the codes can be accessed by clicking on the menu to the left. The base model code, adopted by reference, should be available at the reference desk at your local library or at the permit counter of your local building department.

The National Electrical Code is adopted and amended by the Department of Labor and Industries. Please see their code site at http://www.lni.wa.gov/TradesLicensing/Electrical

View Adopted Changes

The State Building Code Council has adopted the 2009 editions of the codes below, with the noted amendments. These codes will go into effect July 1, 2010.

The Washington State Ventilation and Indoor Air Quality Code has been repealed, as has the Washington State Historic Building Code. Provisions formerly found in the VIAQ are now located in the IRC, the IMC and the IBC as appropriate. The Historic Building Code has been replaced by the International Existing Buildings Code, as adopted and amended by WAC 51-50-480000. See the IBC for state amendments.

State Building Code

The State Building Code (SBC) is the minimum construction requirement for the state of Washington and includes:

  • 2006 International Building Code with statewide amendments
  • ICC/ANSI A117.1-03, Accessible and Usable Buildings and Facilities, with statewide amendments
  • 2006 International Residential Code with statewide amendments
  • 2006 International Mechanical Code with statewide amendments
  • 2004 Liquefied Petroleum Gas Code (NFPA 58)
  • 2006 National Fuel Gas Code (NFPA 54) for LP Gas
  • 2006 International Fire Code with statewide amendments
  • 2006 Uniform Plumbing Code with statewide amendments
  • 2006 Washington State Energy Code
  • 2006 Washington State Ventilation and Indoor Air Quality Code
  • The Washington State Historic Building Code (published in 1991)
