1104.1,  Areas of evacuation assistance

QUESTIONS:

How many areas of evacuation assistance are required for the following:

1.  The second story of a two story office building, which requires a minimum of two exits and which does not require an accessible route of travel to the second floor?

2.  The second story of a two-story office building, which requires a minimum of three exits, which has an accessible route of travel to the second floor?

ANSWERS:

1.  Areas of evacuation assistance are required at a ratio of 1:1 for all required second floor exits, which are not accessible.  An exception to this requirement is provided under 1104.1.  See also Interpretation No. 00-04.

2.  Areas of evacuation assistance are required at a ratio of 1:1 for all required second floor exits, which are not accessible.  An exception to this requirement is provided under 1104.1.
