STATE BUILDING CODE INTERPRETATION NO. 00-02

CODE:

1997 State Regulations for Barrier-Free Facilities

SECTION:

Section 1105.4.9 Alarms

QUESTION:

1. Is it the intent of the Regulations for Barrier-Free Facilities to require the installation of audible and visual appliances based on supervision requirements alone when central, remote, or proprietary monitoring equipment is installed only to supervise sprinkler systems for water flow?

2. Is it the intent of the Regulations for Barrier-Free Facilities to require the installation of audible and visual alarms when central, remote or proprietary monitoring equipment is installed which includes a manual pull station?

ANSWER:

1. and 2. No. The intent of Section 1105.4.9 is to require both audible and visual alarms be provided where a fire alarm system is already required. Central, proprietary, or remote station monitoring of a sprinkler system, with or without a pull station, does not in itself trigger the requirement to provide audible and visual alarms.
