STATE BUILDING CODE INTERPRETATION NO. 99-05

CODE: 1997 State Regulations for Barrier-Free Facilities
SECTION: 1107.1, Accessible Parking
QUESTION: Can adjacent buildings share a common barrier free stall as opposed to having a separate stall for each, provided the number of stalls required for the combined buildings is not reduced? Are there any published standards for locating these stalls in the right-of-way?
ANSWER: Yes, it could be possible for two adjacent buildings to share common barrier free parking stalls. WAC 51-40-1107.1 simply states that where parking is provided for a building, it must have the appropriate number of accessible stalls as outlined under Table 11-F. Furthermore, Section 1107.1.6 states that accessible parking must be located on the shortest possible accessible route of travel to an accessible building entrance. There are no other directions given in the code that would apply to shared parking stalls.
