SECTION: 1106.15, Visual Alarm placement
QUESTION: 1. In an existing facility (no construction being done), where an existing alarm system is being replaced with a new system, would section 1106.15 apply? 

2. In an existing facility (no construction is being done), and a new alarm system is being installed, would visual devices be required, and if so would they need to be mounted as designated in 1106.15.2?

ANSWER: 1. Yes, Section 1106.15 applies. Alarm systems are not exempt in Section 1112.1.4.4; only electrical, mechanical or plumbing systems or hazardous material removal are exempt from Chapter 11 standards. 

2. Yes, Section 1106.15.2 applies. However, for compliance with national requirements, visual alarms placed where their bottoms are at a height above the finished floor of not less than 80 inches and not greater than 96 inches is considered to be equivalent facilitation (UFC 1007.2.12.10.2.2).
