SECTION:  304.2.2.1 Laboratories and vocational shops.
QUESTION: 
  1. Is the statement "Laboratories or groups of laboratories under the same management", intending educational buildings only or is it inclusive of other buildings classified as B Occupancies such as medical research facilities with quantities of hazardous materials that do not exceed exempt amounts listed in Table 3D or 3E?

  2. Is the statement "Laboratories or groups of laboratories may include accessory support areas such as offices", intending small offices where the scientist would do computations and other associated paper work or larger office areas such as the marketing department of a medical research facility with quantities of hazardous materials that do not exceed the exempt amounts listed in Table 3D or 3E?
ANSWER: 
  1. The state amendment to Uniform Building Code Section 304.2.2.1 is intended to apply to any building classified as a B Occupancy.

  2. The expression "accessory support areas such as offices" is intended to include only work areas for activity which is subordinate to the activity carried out in the laboratory, such as small offices where scientists would do computations and other associated paper work. It is not intended to include areas used for other distinct activities such as marketing, shipping and receiving, billing, administration, etc.
