STATE BUILDING CODE INTERPRETATION NO. 98-03

CODE: 1994 State Regulations for Barrier-Free Facilities
SECTION:  Sections 1111 and 1103.1.2.1
QUESTION:  Is it necessary to provide an accessible route of travel to a permanent raised platform that is part of a new addition to an existing Group A occupancy?
ANSWER:  Yes. New additions being made to an existing building must conform to the requirements found under Chapter 11, Part II New Construction. Section 1103.1.2.1, Group A Occupancies, does not provide a specific exception for raised floor areas, and therefore an accessible route must be provided to the platform.
