STATE BUILDING CODE INTERPRETATION NO. 97-03

CODE: 1994 State Regulations for Barrier-Free Facilities
SECTION:  Section 904.3.2 and Section 1105.4.9, Alarms
QUESTION:  Section 904.3.2 requires an audible sprinkler flow alarm to be provided on the exterior of the building and in the interior of the building in a normally occupied location. Does this requirement alone force visual alarms as required in Section 1105.4.9?

If the answer to the above question is no, would the flow alarm requirement trigger any visual alarm devices?

ANSWER: No. The requirement outlined in Section 904.3.2 alone would not trigger visual alarm placement throughout the building.

Yes. A single visual alarm station should be set up in conjunction with the sprinkler flow alarm located inside a building. This single device should be located in the same place as the sprinkler flow alarm device.
