STATE BUILDING CODE INTERPRETATION NO. 94-07

CODE: 1992 State Regulations for Barrier-Free Facilities (as Revised, 1993)
SECTION: 51-20-3107 (a) 6
QUESTION: If a building has multiple parking lots (i.e., one for employees, one for customers) do all lots need to have accessible parking spaces?
ANSWER: WAC 51-20-3107 (a) simply states that where parking is provided for a building, it must have the appropriate number of accessible stalls as outlined under Table 31-F. Section 3106 (a) 6 states that the accessible parking must be located on the shortest possible accessible route of travel to an accessible building entrance. These are your only parameters under the code. Therefore, it can be assumed that all accessible parking for the total number of spaces in all lots serving a building must be located on the shortest possible route of travel to that building regardless of the number of lots serving the establishment.
