STATE BUILDING CODE INTERPRETATION NO. 94-06

CODE: 1992 State Regulations for Barrier-Free Facilities (as Revised, 1993)
SECTION: 51-20-3106 (d), 3106 (d) 7C, Exception 1
QUESTION: Can a curb ramp extend into the walking area of a sidewalk if the side slopes are 1:12, and if that is the case, does this conflict with 3106(d)3?
ANSWER: Where a curb ramp enters into an accessible route, and some people are expected to cross the curb ramp at right angels to the ramp, the cross slopes of that portion of the accessible route may exceed 1 in 48 for the portions of the route incorporated in the curb ramp. The maximum slope at any point would not exceed the 1 in 12 maximum slope of curb ramps or their side slopes.

NOTE: An alternative design for this situation which would be more easily maneuverable, would two 1 in 12 slopes with no cross slopes, which drop to a center level area at the same level as a parking lot or cross walk. The level area between the two 1 in 1 slopes should be at least 44 by 44 inches.
