STATE BUILDING CODE INTERPRETATION NO. 94-04

CODE: 1992 State Regulations for Barrier-Free Facilities (as Revised 1993)
SECTION: 51-20-3106 (p) 5
QUESTION: Are the symbols that are required to be on accessible signage required to be raised as is implied in this section?
ANSWER: It was not the intent of the Washington code to require symbols such as the International Symbol of Access, the symbol for text telephones, and the symbol for assistive listening systems to be raised symbols. Other pictorial symbols, for example, elevator interior control symbols, or punctuation should be consistent with the raised symbol requirement.
