STATE BUILDING CODE INTERPRETATION NO. 07-07

CODE:

2006 International Residential Code / VIAQ

SECTION:

Appendix F / VIAQ 502.1.2

QUESTION:

With the adoption of Appendix F, how does the state Ventilation and Indoor Air Quality Code apply to the 2006 IRC? If a home is built under the IRC using the provisions of Section R408.3, do the requirements of VIAQ Section 502.1.2 apply?

ANSWER:

The intent is that a building built under the IRC use Appendix F for radon mitigation as applicable rather than the VIAQ Chapter 5. However, the rest of the VIAQ (Chapters 3 and 4) would still apply to any structures built under the IRC. Chapter 5 of the VIAQ would apply to any residential structures built under the IBC.

If a building is constructed under the IRC using the unvented crawlspace provisions of Section R408.3, Section R327.1 would require that the building also comply with Appendix F for radon mitigation, rather than the VIAQ Chapter 5.
