STATE BUILDING CODE INTERPRETATION NO. 07-01

CODE:

 2006 International Residential Code

SECTION:

 R703.1

QUESTION:

Does the requirement in Section R703.1 for “…a water-resistive barrier behind the exterior veneer…and a means of draining water that enters the assembly to the exterior” prohibit single-wall construction?

ANSWER:

No, this section does not require a rain-shield or similar construction method and would not prevent single-wall construction. The requirement for “drainage” of water that enters an exterior wall envelope covering is taken care of with the use of a “water-resistive barrier” under the final exterior wall covering. Thus, if water does penetrate under the exterior wall covering, the felt paper or other approved material will shed that water downward through gravity to the bottom of the wall where it will escape to the exterior.
