CODE:

SECTION:

2003 IBC Section 3403.1
2003 IFC Section 903.2.1.2

QUESTION:

1.  An existing building is being remodeled and undergoing a change in occupancy to include an A-2 occupancy with an occupant load of 246.  Does this proposed alteration require sprinklers?

2.  If the above answer is yes, would then the same apply if the present use was a bar and additional space was being added?

ANSWER:

1.  Yes.  The intent of the amendment to IFC Section 903.2.1.2 is to require sprinklers in occupancies where there is an increased risk to fire and life safety with the added distractions of alcohol and/or music and entertainment, and a high occupant density. This amendment was added in view of the tragic losses in Rhode Island and similar incidences, and will be adopted in the 2006 Edition of the International Codes.

2.  Yes.
